Our cloud backup and Disaster-Recovery-as-a-Service offerings are powered by Veeam software. Here's why we chose to partner with Veaam.
With a free 'community edition' of their software and aggressively low pricing, Veeam made enterprise-class backup software available to organisations of all sizes - including smaller firms and charities.
Value for money matters to our customers, regardless of their size.
When we discuss data backup with our current and prospective customers, many tell us unprompted that they use and like Veeam software.
Veeam has a solid reputation, which makes our job easier.
Some technology leaders rest on their laurels. Veeam isn't like that.
Although they're in a leading position, they are still hungry - trying with every release to extend their lead over the competition.
This is important to us because it takes significant investment for us to work with a partner - in terms of partner selection, productisation, marketing collateral, sales training and support training. The longer Veeam can extend its lead, the better.
Gartner's recent analysis (Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions, Michael Hoeck, Nik Simpson, Jerry Rozeman, Jason Donham, 28th July 2022.) placed Veeam in the 'Leaders Quadrant,' giving it the highest 'ability to execute' score of any of the 14 firms reviewed.
This is the sixth time Veeam has been classified as a leader by Gartner.
Organisations are often reluctant to change their backup software until they are forced to do so by backup failures. It's helpful to us when independent, respected analysts such as Gartner say nice things about Veeam as this reassures customers that switching to Veeam-based backups is a sensible choice.
They appear to have recognised that 'cloud backup' subscription services were a potential threat to their market dominance, so they decided to beat their potential competition at their own game by working with service providers such as hSo.
They write software specifically for firms such as ours - so we can offer cloud backup services powered by Veeam software. They don't just provide client software. They provide backend software too.
This means existing Veeam customers can backup to our cloud backup service using their existing Veeam software.
i.e. it doesn't JUST support backups. It can do server replication, so if your servers go belly up, the entire workloads on those servers can be replicated on alternative hardware in the cloud almost instantly.
Although backups are great, restoring large amounts of data can take quite a lot of time - causing business disruption. DRaaS shortens that time - possibly to just a few seconds.
For example, Hyper-V customers can back up their virtual machines and restore them to our VMware-based DR hosting platform, with the Veeam software translating between the two formats. And once our customer has restored or replaced their original Hyper-V stack, we can copy those VMs over from our VMware platform using Veeam.
This enables us to provide Disaster-Recovery-as-a-Service to organisations, regardless of whether they choose VMware or Hyper-V.
With over 4000 employees and over $1bn in revenue, Veeam has the scale necessary to support the R&D spending required to maintain its lead in a global, competitive field.
Ransomware attackers are sly. They seek to slowly replace the victim's corporate files, overriding their 'clean' backups with compromised ones, so there's no alternative but to pay the ransom if data is to be restored.
Veeam's been very good at creating options to avoid this - such as scanning data for malware before backing it up and enabling tamper-proof immutable backups.
Analysts' plaudits, ransomware-fighting features, Hyper-V support, and big R&D budgets mean nothing unless the end result is happy customers.
Our existing cloud backup and DR-as-a-Service customers do appear to be happy. Part of this has to do with our contribution - consultative advice prior to purchase, scalable data storage platforms, keen pricing, solid DR hosting, and ongoing support. However, a large portion of customer satisfaction ought to be credited to Veeam's contribution: feature-rich, easy-to-use client software for our customer and reliable backend software for us.
