Royal Holloway meets student demand for increased bandwidth
Royal Holloway University in London claims that it has now met requests form students for greater bandwidth.
The university officials claims that with increased tuition fees, students are demanding much better facilities, including an internet connection much better than the one they have at home.
The student halls network was becoming congested and students were experiencing some very slow connections due to inefficient bandwidth. With some 10,000 students and 1,800 staff using the network, it was simply overloaded, particularly in light of the appetite for streaming and large file downloading that most young people now have.
However, the university has now improved the network and the students are happy with their new levels of connectivity. Nigel Rata from Royal Holloway’s IT service delivery team explained, "One of the first things new students do when they enter halls is run a speed test on the network, so we are very aware that speedy access is a priority for them and impacts on their levels of satisfaction."
He added that the university realised it needed a WAN optimisation system to ensure everyone could have a connection that met their expectations: "We needed something with a faster management interface, especially when reaching operational parameters, and which wasn't limited as to what it can do with dynamic partitions and slicing up bandwidth."
