VoIP grows in popularity

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology has become increasingly popular among business users in recent years, and recent research suggest its use is to grow even further.

Two recent studies have suggested this form of telephony over the internet will go from strength to strength. TechNavio’s Global Carrier VoIP Market 2011-2015 study, for example, suggests that the use of VoIP will grow at a compound annual rate of 16.6 per cent per year for the coming four years.

The report is a global one, looking at the technology's use in the EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions. A previous report from the firm suggested that the mobile VoIP market in the EMEA region alone would see its value rise to £3.4 billion between now and 2014.

Separately, a report from CorpComms and Ipsos found that 14 per cent of the world’s entire population is now using VoIP to communicate. Some of the heaviest users are in countries that may be surprising to some – including Russia, India and Turkey. In Russia, for example, some 36 per cent of people communicate over VoIP.

Businesses are keen on the technology as it reduced the cost of making calls by enabling them to speak over the internet, rather than through traditional telephony hardware. However, it also requires a fast network connection, which means many firms turn to leased lines to ensure they can reap the benefits of VoIP regardless of whether they are located in a fast broadband area.
