VoIP can be cheap to install but needs a fast connection
Although VoIP is growing in popularity among businesses who want to reduce the cost of making calls, some are still wary about the initial investment needed. They shouldn’t be, claims PC World blogger, Brad Chacos, who says that the cost of installing VoIP is much less than people think.
Mr Chacos admits that businesses are keeping their purse strings tighter than ever and some are, therefore, less than willing to invest in new technologies – even those that will save them money in the long run. However, he asserts that the cost of installing a VoIP system, that lets staff make calls over the internet, often via a leased line, can be ‘next to nothing.’
Those businesses looking to introduce VoIP need to look at how many end-users they will have making calls. The more there are, the more bandwidth they will need, which requires a fast internet connection. Without this, using VoIP could be difficult. However, opting for a leased line solution can mean fast connectivity for anyone,
regardless of their office location.
Mr Chacos explained, “If your Internet service provider has a bandwidth cap in place, you should take that into consideration as well. Most VoIP service providers use the high-quality G.711 codec for VoIP communications, which consumes 64kb of data every second you talk.
“In reality, even a large number of people should be able to chat it up on VoIP without having to worry about hitting bandwidth caps, but you'll want to keep close tabs on your data usage to avoid exceeding that cap.”
