Mass internet usage boosts VoIP take-up
According to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the number of people using the internet has more than doubled in the last six years, meaning that web-based communication tools are more relevant than ever.
The ever-increasing impact of the internet - which now has 33 million adults making use of it every day, a rise from 16 million in 2006 – means that many will be keen to take advantage of the myriad linked communications and technologies on offer.
One such tool is IP telephony, which can bring major benefits to organisations and individuals thanks to its speedy, reliable and cost-effective service.
The research revealed that 32 per cent of adults made or received telephone and video calls through the internet last year, more than double the 16 per cent figure recorded in 2009, and a major increase on the 2007 figure of just 8 per cent.
Amongst the most prevalent users include those working from home, who rely on a fast and reliable connection to office-based colleagues. International calls are also far cheaper when made through VoIP, ensuring that organisations with branches located across the globe will be able to keep in contact with each other quickly and easily. The most popular online activity recorded last year was sending emails, with 73 per cent of the UK's internet users doing so, swiftly followed by researching services and products and using social media.
The ONS figures also showed that the number of adults who claimed to have never used the internet fell from 36 per cent to just 16 per cent between 2006 and last year.
