Major global bodies turning to VoIP
Highlighting the importance and potential of VoIP to major organisations across the globe, the Queensland parliamentary service is planning to roll out an IP-based unified communications structure.
The Queensland parliamentary service – which provides support services such as advice and information to the Australian Parliament – has said that it is keen to upgrade its communications infrastructure across the board.
According to a new tender that was published this month, there is an 'urgent need to replace ageing telephone infrastructure located in electorate offices across the State.' The parliamentary service – which carried out a recent strategic review into IT services and other communication services – found that a unified system would be the most suitable for their purposes.
Some of the suggestions raised by the review included introducing communication methods such as VoiP and web conferencing. Other suggestions included relocating the data stores belonging to the corporate and electoral offices.
Currently, the parliamentary service uses a myriad of communication services – such as 525 Telstra Customnet voice services, which include 437 analogue handsets as well as 88 digital 'P-Phone' style handsets 'in various forms and ages.' The organisation also makes use of '45 direct PSTN services used for fax, modem and EFTPOS machines.'
The parliamentary service reported that each of the offices belonging to parliamentary members includes a "small telephone system that was installed some 15-20 years ago". Computer World reported that the body went on to say, "This system is ageing and is now unable to meet the modern business demands of Members and staff".
The parliamentary service reported that it “requires the assistance of experts in the field of telecommunications to provide advice and assistance to facilitate these investment decisions,” before making the switch to IP-based unified communications.
