Japan leads world in terms of VoIP usage
A new study has analysed VoIP usage across the globe, highlighting the growing importance of - and worldwide reliance on - the communication system.
The Arbitron Mobile on-device software meter, which was put together by international media and marketing research firm Arbitron, found that Japanese smartphone users are the most likely to access the service, being the predominant users of the application on mobile devices by a long way.
The research looked at the use of VoIP in seven countries across the globe and found that, during the month of January, 70 per cent of the smartphone users in Japan questioned for the research accessed VoIP apps. These users spent six hours and 25 minutes making use of VoIP over the course of the month, accessing their voice and messaging apps an average of 222 times.
This was three times more than users in Indonesia, who were found to be the second most active users of VoIP. Forty-one per cent of Indonesian users surveyed for the research used VoIP apps, spending average of 2 hours and 15 minutes each month making use of them. Users in the United Kingdom were the third most active users, with 22.1 per cent of users on VoIP at 35.1 sessions per month. They were followed by users in the United States, Germany and France.
Users in China were found to be the least active users of VoIP, with just 16.4 per cent of those smartphone users surveyed in the country making use of any VoIP apps during January.
Josh Nay writing for TruTower said: "This [VoIP] trend will not only continue, but is likely to accelerate over time, leading carriers with the options of either adapting by creating their own VoIP solutions or making deals with existing VoIP providers ... in order to keep their profits - and their business - safe."
