IP telephony rolled out by Department for Transport
The Department for Transport has invested in IP telephony, making it the latest in a line of major organisations to turn to the communication tool.
The Government department - which is responsible for the English transport network and several transport matters in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - has two bases in London and Hastings, East Sussex. Both are set to benefit from the rollout of IP telephony solutions, allowing staff to communicate better with colleagues based both inside and outside the office.
The Department has recently chosen a contractor to carry out the implementation following the Public Services Network procedure it must carry out by law, which allows all approved service providers to submit a tender for the contract.
IP telephony will allow the Department to lower its costs by accessing far more affordable call rates, especially when contacting clients and colleagues based in other countries across the globe.
Other facets the Department will now be able to make use of include call recording, call logging, voice conferencing and unified messaging. Running the new technology will also allow the department to become more cost-effective across its communications sector, as it can run as many lines as it needs, therefore not paying money for lines it does not actually need.
Computer Weekly confirmed that the Department for Transport's IP telephony deployment process has already begun, but Azzurri - the firm carrying out the implementation - has not yet confirmed when the system would be going live.
