Growing video conferencing use recorded in 2011
Companies could start to look into managed networks in order to cope with the rising use of video conferencing and enterprise telepresence, according to new statistics.
Research from Infonetics revealed that both areas of IT saw revenue rise by 24 per cent in the first half of 2011 in comparison to the same period last year.
Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise networks and video at Infonetics Research, added that the year as a whole is expected to deliver “strong double-digit growth over 2010”.
He added, “Growth will stay in double-digit territory through at least 2015, thanks to demographic and communication trends favouring video, increasing acceptance of video among users, and specific use cases like tele-learning and tele-medicine.”
The market as a whole was found to have increased by 21 per cent just between the first and second quarters of the year, reaching $638 million in revenue in the second quarter and setting a record high for quarterly revenue.
The market is not growing evenly, however, with certain products taking the lion's share of revenues. Dedicated multi-purpose room video systems, for example, make up over half of the enterprise video equipment market now and are expected to continue to be the biggest revenue generator in the arena.
But videophones, while the smallest sector of the market, are also the fastest-growing segment with the strongest demand for these devices is coming from North America, China, India and Brazil.
With more and more people looking to work remotely and businesses expanding across continents, video conferencing is really coming into its own. Companies that are considering the idea, however, are advised to check that their network will be capable of handling the data at an acceptable speed or think about managed networks as a possible solution.
