Facebook proves popularity of VoIP
VoIP has been given the ultimate seal of approval as social networking giant Facebook rolls the service out to its Facebook Messenger users in the U.S.
Following a fortnight of testing in Canada, US users can now make use of VoIP calling through their Messenger app in a similar way in which they would use Facebook voicemail. The social networking site has also made an addition to the app which now means that support is now in place for those making use of the VoIP service.
The service is not yet available for Android users, but users of iPhones who are based in the U.S can open the Facebook Messenger app on their smartphone, and see a ‘Free Call’. Once the ‘I’ icon on the top right of open messages is tapped, the VoIP will be activated. The service can be used whenever an internet connection is available, and is free with WiFi. It is thought that the VoIP service being offered by the group will soon be available to users based in the UK too.
The roll-out of the VoIP service is all part of Facebook’s attempts to ground itself more firmly in the mobile communication and smartphone sector.
At the time of the announcement of the new VoIP service at the end of last year, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said: “The world generally believes that social software will be everywhere, and it will only be a matter of time before it reaches billions of people, whether through us or someone else.
“The driving narrative is not about wiring up the world because a lot of the interesting stuff has been done but about what cool social apps you can build now this social infrastructure is in place," he added.
