Broadband access vital for businesses
Access to broadband services is becoming increasingly important as IP communications and other bandwidth-intensive services are becoming almost vital for businesses.
Rural companies in particular are likely to benefit from VoIP services, helping them to keep in touch with clients and colleagues around the world. However, a recent report from regulator Ofcom has revealed that rural areas of Wales are some of the worst parts of the UK for broadband provision. Companies in these areas who rely on a connection might want to look into leased line providers if they are struggling with their current solutions.
Indeed, the average Welsh modem sync speed is just 6.5Mbps, while almost fifth of properties are struggling by on download capabilities of less than 2Mbps. This compares poorly with the UK average of 7.5Mbps.
Companies in rural regions are, however, keen to improve the situation. MP Glyn Davies, who represents Montgomeryshire in the House of Commons, recently insisted that high-speed internet connections are “crucial” for companies that are located outside major towns and cities.
“Good access to the internet is something that is going to be necessary to sell houses, to set up businesses and retain public services,” he remarked.
Wales Office minister David Jones, meanwhile, has recently explained that the government is “committed to breaking down the barriers to effective communications in rural areas”. The efforts to improve IP communications should help farmers, households and businesses across Wales, he added.
The comments follow news that Wales is to receive a substantial portion of the government’s £530 million broadband fund. Jeremy Hunt, secretary of state for culture, announced that the country will receive £56.9 million, with a similar sum to be provided by the Welsh Government. This should enable the vast majority of businesses and homes to make use of IP communications through broadband connections.
