Virtualisation remains popular in UK
Major businesses in the UK are turning more and more towards virtualisation when it comes to updating their IT systems.
In fact, the latest V-Index, an online study assessing around 500 companies and their use of virtualisation, revealed that the UK is ahead of its major European competitors when it comes to the virtualisation of their servers.
A total of 95 per cent of organisations in the UK were shown to have either partly or fully virtualised servers, which is eight per cent higher than the average. Germany, meanwhile, clocked in with 90 per cent, while France followed with 78 per cent.
Britain was also found to be racing ahead of the US, with a higher percentage of company data centre servers using the new technology.
Meanwhile, research into the adoption of specific brand hypervisors revealed that VMware remains on top with 83.6 per cent of servers overall and 91 per cent of those in use by UK companies.
There has, however, been a slight dip in the virtualisation penetration rate between the second and third quarters of the year. On average in quarter two, 39.4 per cent of servers were virtualised, but this fell to 38.9 per cent in the third quarter. The dip was reflected across all of the countries surveyed; the UK, France, Germany and the US, with the UK showing one of the most significant declines from 35.7 per cent to 29 per cent.
Despite this, the vast majority still intended to increase their use of server virtualisation, with 81.2 per cent of those surveyed expected to do so. With regards to the UK in particular, this dipped to 70 per cent but this could be accounted for by the country's already higher than average penetration rate.
