Virtualisation becoming standard technology
Virtualisation is becoming standard in a large number of business organisations, recent comments and figures suggest.
The latest V-Index survey revealed that nearly four in every ten servers are virtual, with a typical large business running 470 virtual machines and 113 hosts. This means that across the UK, the US, France and Germany, 39 per cent of servers are virtualised.
Meanwhile, over 90 per cent of businesses are using virtualisation to some degree. However, around 40 per cent claim that reliability concerns are preventing them from expanding further, while a similar proportion of companies want to give their hardware a once over before moving further into the virtual field.
Ratmir Timashev, chief executive of virtualisation management firm Veeam, commented on the research: “While the results show that virtualisation has become a standard technology in most enterprises, it is clear that there is still room for increased penetration.”
Vanson Bourne conducted the survey, which covered 544 businesses. However, Veeam commissioned the study, with the aim of developing a community site where companies can share their virtualisation experiences.
VMware was revealed to be the most widely used hypervisor, with 84 per cent of companies reporting that they use this solution. Microsoft’s Hyper-V can in second with around 60 per cent, while 55 per cent make use of Citrix Zen and 12 per cent employ alternative virtualisation solutions.
The results come as VMware reported a 37 per cent increase on its second quarter profits in comparison to last year.
Paul Maritz, the company’s chief executive, commented: “The quarter’s strong performance reflects the continued adoption of virtualisation as a key technology for the next era of computing.” He added that the systems help improve efficiency, flexibility and automation.
