Cisco and Citrix to enter alliance
An alliance is being developed between Cisco and Citrix Systems to assist businesses in the deployment of virtualised desktops.
The two companies plan to combine Cisco's experience in networking and data centre operation with Citrix's knowledge of virtualisation and the delivery of desktops, applications and data. The pair expect that these services will be combined for use on a range of end-user platforms including PCs, Macs, tablets and smartphones.
As well as offering assistance in deployment, the service aims to supply data centre products to make it easier for organisations to employ the infrastructure needed to make use of IT as a service.
By investing in joint go-to-market activities, the alliance hopes to push up demand for their products and services in areas such as desktop virtualisation and the cloud; both of which are showing strong levels of growth at the moment.
Cisco observed that this is due to the industry shift “away from the PC era to the cloud era”, in which mobile work forces require access to media-rich applications “from any device, anywhere, anytime”. By employing desktop virtualisation, enterprises are able to deliver this along with additional security benefits, flexibility and cost-savings.
A number of organisations are starting to take note of the benefits of virtualisation. Among these are the government of the Isle of Man, which recently managed to lower its operating costs by 15 per cent through the implementation of virtualisation and cloud computing services.
Peter Clarke, the government's chief technology officer, observed: “By virtualising our entire server platform and all service applications, the Isle of Man Government has significantly increased service levels as well as data flexibility and availability.”
