University of Leicester top for best broadband speeds
As many A-level students received their results yesterday, uSwitch, a broadband comparison website, released research offering an alternative university league table. The league table was research of where students would get the best broadband speeds.
The study found that the University of Leicester was ranked number one for broadband speeds offering speeds of, on average, 39.7 Mbps. In traditional educational tables, Leicester is ranked at 47th. In second place is Queen’s Belfast with 36.9Mbps, with Nottingham coming in third at 36.18 Mbps.
The leading educational universities, Oxford and Cambridge, while lagging behind in the broadband speeds table, are still easily in the top ten. These higher education juggernauts have speeds of 34.61 and 32.83 Mbps respectively.
However, Aberdeen is the main culprit when offering broadband speeds. Despite being ranked 36th in the country for higher education, Aberdeen broadband speeds ranks as the lowest with 15.27Mbps offered in student areas. This means that a four-bed student house could result in speeds dropping to just 3.82Mbps. This would slow up simple tasks such as Skyping, watching films etc.
Ewan Taylor-Gibson, broadband expert at uSwitch.com, said of the research results: “It turns out that some of our more esteemed institutions for higher education aren’t quite so high achieving when it comes to broadband speeds.
“Students need fast, reliable broadband for research, streaming lectures and submitting work on time – both at home, and on campus.”
