Telford broadband phase one rollout completed nine months ahead of schedule
The first phase of broadband rollout in Telford is set to be completed a whole nine months ahead of schedule according to the Superfast Telford partnership that is leading the project.
That means that hundreds of businesses in the newly constructed Lightmoor Village will now have access to superfast broadband thanks to the £5.6 million project set up in conjunction with Telford & Wrekin Council and BT. Four hundred properties will be able to upgrade their internet and access the fibre broadband speeds.
Engineers from BT’s network business, Openreach, have installed two brand new fibre cabinets which have connected residents and business owners at Lightmoor Village to the high-speed internet connection. Upgrade and phase two of the project is set to begin which will enable even more properties to be connected.
So far, the first phase of the Superfast Telford project has seen 1,900 premises connected to fibre broadband. It is anticipated that 9,300 homes and businesses will be connected by 2017. Of these, 8,800 will be able to gain access to 24 Mbps speeds and above.
One of the main reasons for a quicker rollout of the superfast broadband connections is because of a close collaboration between BT and the council. This has allowed work to be done more quickly and efficiently. Councillor Angela McClements, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said of the rollout: “This is great news that we’ll be able to get a very significant number of homes in Lightmoor connected to superfast fibre broadband much earlier than expected.
“We’re also looking to ensuring that all homes in the Lightmoor area will have access to a superfast service – that’s important for this fast-growing community.
“At the same time, the Superfast Telford partnership is continuing to work to find a solution for the two per cent of homes and businesses in the borough that are not currently due to receive fibre broadband from our roll-out or any commercial delivery.”
