Super-fast broadband will boost UK economy in 2012, says Cameron
Prime Minister David Cameron has stressed the importance of super-fast broadband services to the strengthening of the UK economy.
The roll out of next-generation broadband will play a key role in returning the turbulent economy to growth, and a strong focus should be placed on the sector to ensure it is utilised to its full advantage.
Cameron confirmed that the government's super-fast broadband target has been listed as one of 2012’s ‘big plans’ as steps are taken to turn around the country’s infrastructure, and, in turn, its economic situation.
The Prime Minister said that ‘much needs to change’ if the economy is to return to positive growth. Alongside the successful introduction of super-fast broadband for individuals and businesses located across the country, other improvements such as the construction of more homes and the creation of better transport systems were deemed to be crucial.
“This will be the year Britain sees the world and the world sees Britain. It must be the year we go for it - the year the coalition government I lead does everything it takes to get our country up to strength. I profoundly believe that we can turn these things around,” Cameron was reported as saying by Cable.co.uk.
Cameron confirmed that the government is standing firm on its commitment to deliver ‘the best super-fast broadband network in Europe’ by the year 2015. Despite £350 million being assigned to fund faster broadband services, no exact target for the network has yet been announced.
Another £100 million has been set aside to fund the creation of numerous ‘super-connected cities; located across the country, which will boast super-fast broadband services and advanced mobile connectivity.
