Storage shipments signal growth of 'big data'
The recent surge in shipments of storage systems signals a further move towards the 'big data' era of computing as companies look to prepare their networks.
According to the latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC), Worldwide Disk Storage Systems Market in the Second Quarter, the sector posted a year-over-year growth of 12.2 per cent, totalling just over $5.6 billion in the second quarter of this year.
Meanwhile, the total disk storage systems market grew by 10.2 per cent against the previous year's second quarter. This means that 5,353 petabytes of total disk storage systems capacity was shipped; a growth of 46.7 per cent on the previous year.
Liz Conner, senior research analyst at storage systems with IDC, commented: “External storage systems revenue increased solidly in the second quarter, with all the segments experiencing double-digit gains as end-user investment in new technology continued.”
She added that a number of trends in the use of IT have added to this increase: “New vendor offerings around virtualisation, Big Data, and Cloud computing coupled with less restrictive IT budgets have contributed to this growth.”
In terms of vendors, EMC held on to its lead in the external disk storage systems market, with 28.7 per cent of the revenue share from the three month period. It was followed by IBM and NetApp tied in second with 13,7 per cent and 12.8 per cent of market share respectively, while HP held 11 per cent and Hitachi and Dell took 8.1 per cent and 7.9 per cent of the market each.
Open networked disk storage also proved popular, with a growth of 15 per cent recorded over the year and revenues of around $4.8 billion.
As an increasing number of companies look to expand their storage capacity, it is important to ensure that networks are able to handle the large amounts of data that will inevitably be passed along them.
