Rural Yorkshire set for broadband revolution
North Yorkshire is set for what has been hailed as a “communications revolution”, as the council unveils plans for superfast broadband throughout the county.
North Yorkshire is said to be the most rural county in England, so access to speedy broadband will be a major benefit for residents and businesses. Some have even said the development is on a par with the introduction of canals and railways because of the impact it will have on the lives of people and SMEs in the area.
Today North Yorkshire County Council is set to announce the details of a deal to install a high-speed broadband network across the county. Councillors plan for the initiative to connect every single home and business in North Yorkshire to the internet and give them a guaranteed connection speed of at least 2Mbs by 2015.
Councillor Carl Les, North Yorkshire County Council’s deputy leader and chairman of the Connecting North Yorkshire project, told the Yorkshire Post, “This is a massive event for North Yorkshire. It is going to make a huge difference to so many people’s lives.”
He added. “It’s not an exaggeration to compare this sweeping technological revolution to the creation of the railways in the 19th century, or the development of air travel in the 20th.”
North Yorkshire is the first of five pilot areas chosen for the Government’s £850 million broadband roll-out scheme. It is understood that the council received £17 million from the Government and a further £8 million in EU funding. The appointed private telecoms firm is also thought to have invested £25 million to get the initiative up and running.
