Rural regions of Scotland to benefits from copper lines upgrade
More rural areas of Scotland are due to get fast broadband connections due to an extension of the copper lines in the area.
The upgrade to the copper lines will bring faster internet connections to regions including Dumfries and Galloway, Banff, Alness, Invergordon, Dingwall, Lerwick, Kirkwall, Tain and Thurso. The latter of these regions are in the Northern-most part of the country and are receiving faster broadband as part of an £8 million investment scheme to improve connectivity in the Highland & Islands.
As a result of the new upgrade from BT, some 78 per cent of businesses and homes in the country can access faster broadband services. The Scottish government has, of course, welcomed the improvements. Deputy First Minister and cabinet secretary for infrastructure in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, said, “Broadband, just like roads and railways, is a vital part of Scotland’s infrastructure. I very much welcome this latest announcement from BT.”
The improvements in the Scottish copper wire networks come alongside another £2,5 billion project to roll out fibre broadband to much of the UK, which is expected to be in place by spring 2014.The fibre-opting broadband is intended to bring fast broadband connections to two-thirds of UK households.
For those households and businesses that are still struggling with slow connectivity, opting for a leased line through a managed network devices provider can be a great option.
