New Gartner report highlights Big Data trends
According to a new report from consulting firm Gartner, businesses are extremely keen to invest money into big data, but few have detailed plans in place about what they wish to do with the technology.
The majority of businesses surveyed for the report – 64 per cent – confirmed that they have already purchased, or were planning to purchase, big data solutions at some point during 2013. This figure represented an important rise from the 58 per cent of businesses who reported the same in 2012, highlighting a growth in the reliance on and interest in big data.
Of the 64 per cent, 30 per cent of businesses confirmed that they had already invested in big data tech, while 19 per cent said that they plan to do so over the course of the next year. Fifteen per cent said that they planned to invest in the concept over the next two years. However, despite these impressive figures, less than 8 per cent of firms were found to have actually deployed big data technology, the Gartner report found.
Gartner research vice president, Frank Buytendijk, said in a statement: “For big data, 2013 is the year of experimentation and early deployment. Adoption is still at the early stages with less than 8 per cent of all respondents indicating their organisation has deployed big data solutions. 20 per cent are piloting and experimenting, 18 per cent are developing a strategy, 19 per cent are knowledge gathering, while the remainder have no plans or don’t know.”
Big data is tipped to be the driver of $34 billion worth of IT-related spending across this year, the company found, and it also spotted trends as to how this will happen. Just under half – 49 per cent – of businesses said that they wanted to boost their company’s efficiency by using big data to help to lower costs or identify risks earlier.
Just over half – 55 per cent – said that they hoped big data would help them to improve their customer service offerings, while 42 per cent of organisations reported that they wanted to develop new products and ways of working using insights gained from big data.
