Mozilla to ditch Windows XP and Vista support in 2017
Mozilla is to end support for its Firefox browser that runs in Windows XP and Windows Vista in 2017.
The firm is one of the last remaining browsers that provides support for the Microsoft operating systems.
In a statement Mozilla said that Windows XP and Vista users will automatically be moved to its Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) around March 2017.
However, the exact timing of Mozilla’s relinquishing of the operating systems won’t be decided until summer.
"We expect to continue to provide security updates for users until September 2017," the firm said.
"In mid-2017, user numbers on Windows XP and Vista will be reassessed and a final support end date will be announced."
ESR is a ‘build-and-release’ system designed for enterprises and educational institutions.
“In the meantime, we strongly encourage our users to upgrade to a version of Windows that is supported by Microsoft,” Mozilla said.
“Unsupported operating systems receive no security updates, have known exploits, and are dangerous for you to use. For planning purposes, enterprises using Firefox should consider September 2017 as the support end date for Windows XP and Vista.”
