Majority of Cheshire homes soon to have access to superfast broadband
Around 96 per cent of homes and businesses in Cheshire will soon benefit from high-speed fibre broadband thanks to a new £28.5 million project between BT and four local councils.
The Connecting Cheshire Partnership has secured funding to implement the super-fast broadband, which is expected to be introduced to homes and businesses within the next three years.
More than 400,000 premises located across Warrington, Cheshire and Halton will be able to make use of broadband speeds of 80Mbps by the end of 2016 as a result of the project. The remaining four per cent of premises that are not being connected to the fibre broadband, will also see improvements in broadband running times, as a minimum of 2Mbps or more is planned for all homes and businesses in the area.
Cheshire East has reported that the fibre broadband will ensure that the local economy is boosted and will also help to “create or protect local jobs".
A recent study revealed that the implementation of the faster broadband would lead to an impressive impact of £1.3 billion in gross value added (GVA) over 15 years. It would also “create 11,500 jobs, with a further £330 million of economic benefits to households,” the publication reported.
Councillor David Brown, deputy leader of Cheshire East Council, speaking on behalf of the Connecting Cheshire Partnership said: “From children doing homework, to caring for our elderly population and from social media, to e-commerce and home entertainment – fast broadband is the critical enabler.
“The social, environmental and economic benefits will be huge, making Cheshire one of the best-connected regions in the country,” Mr Brown added.
