Firms reluctant to change hosting provider despite dissatisfaction

Business connectivity quality is truly vital but too many companies still have a relaxed attitude towards it, according to a new survey by Redshift Research.

Almost a third of UK businesses have websites that offer some kind of transaction service. Despite this, too few businesses are giving their web hosting quality the attention it deserves.

This is according to research carried out through interviews with 164 IT buyers in a range of industries including retail, leisure, entertainment and financial services. It was discovered that more than 50 per cent could not give reasons for choosing their web hosting provider.

Only ten per cent of those asked had changed their web hosting provider at some stage in the past two years and this was despite the fact that only 35 per cent said they were actually happy with the service they were receiving.

Raj Sukkersudha, the MD of Q3, an ISP that commissioned the report, commented: “The results demonstrate that the average organisation is surprisingly blasé about their choice of web hosting provider – until there is a problem. Given the sensitivity of much of that data, this is quite alarming.”

Firms who lose connectivity could suffer financial and reputational damage and it is imperative that they invest in ensuring their web presence and transaction capabilities are not compromised. If this means changing their web hosting provider for an improved service, then they should do so. It might also means improving their network by investing in a leased line.

Some 33 per cent of those questioned in the survey said their internet was too slow and 20 per cent said they experienced major outages.
