Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire to receive superfast broadband boost
A planned £50 million investment will see superfast broadband implemented across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, a move which is being welcomed by local business leaders and politicians alike.
Derbyshire County Council has signed a contract with telecommunications giant BT to roll out the superfast service to more than 88,000 homes and businesses across the area. Funding of £27.7 million has been secured as a result of the partnership.
Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire County Council has announced a project with BT worth £20 million in funding. The two schemes combined will ensure that the superfast broadband services serve the vast majority – more than 95 per cent - of residential and commercial properties in both Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire by 2016.
George Cowcher, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce’s chief executive, told the Buxton Advertiser: “This significant extra broadband funding for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire is welcome news for businesses and consumers.
“Having high-speed broadband is absolutely crucial to the future development, growth and success of our businesses. Superfast broadband will benefit everyone in the region and will be a major selling point for businesses and organisations looking to relocate to Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire,” Mr Cowcher said.
Local MP for High Peak, Andrew Bingham confirmed that the news of the new superfast broadband was “fantastic" for people in the High Peak areas who are currently making do with slow internet speeds, which are sometimes almost unusable.
“Although it may be another two years before super-fast broadband is deployed in some areas, the fact that the contract has now been signed with BT is a clear sign of progress, and I’m pleased to have played an active part in pushing for this in the High Peak,” he added.
