Calls to make 5G connectivity a reality for the UK
A study has found that 5G connectivity will help the UK overcome its current digital divide.
Prepared by the Centre for Cities think-tank and titled “Delivering Change”, the report shows significant digital divides across the UK and calls for collective and collaborative efforts to deliver 5G as soon as possible.
The report provides a range of recommendations to make 5G a reality for the people of the UK. This includes calling on the UK Government to implement a fund in the form of rent reductions so that those - individuals and businesses - who allow access to their homes and businesses to improve digital connectivity may be compensated.
To make the most of existing digital connections, the report calls for the Government to deliver on its promise to delegate its responsibility of Adult Education Budget to the cities so that residents may be able to gain the required digital skills to enter the digital connectivity job sphere.
The report also calls on cities to do their part and cites Salford City Council as an example of where a ‘digital first’ strategy has been adopted. The scheme has enabled the residents of the city in Greater Manchester to utilise digital technology to access public services as well as improve the skills of the staff.
For the UK to continue its investment in digital infrastructure, the Government needs to relook at its National Planning Policy Framework. The report recommends that the framework include a mandatory provision that all new housing developments include high-quality digital infrastructures, both mobile and fixed.
The study also proposes that the Electronic Communications Code be reviewed by national leaders after 12 months to ensure there are no hurdles in investing in digital infrastructure and smooth sailing of ongoing delivery of 4G as well as the rollout of 5G in UK cities.
