£28.5m superfast broadband project kicks off in Cheshire
The £28.5 million superfast broadband project has been officially launched in Cheshire under the Connecting Cheshire Partnership.
The launch – which took place at the Oulton Park race circuit – saw more than 100 community 'Digital Champions’ attend to hear discussions relating to the new fibre highspeed network.
The project will bring superfast broadband connectivity to rural premises across Knutsford and the surrounding areas, as well as improving and building upon the services already offered in the region's urban areas.
The Connecting Cheshire Partnership – which is made up of the four Cheshire councils and BT – has confirmed that more than 96 per cent of properties in Cheshire will be able to make use of high-speed fibre broadband of up to 80Mbps by 2016.
This move will make it once of the best connected counties in the country. The Connecting Cheshire Partnership has secured funding from European, local and central government sources. It will see more than 80,000 premises receive additional rural broadband infrastructure.
Leader of Cheshire East Council, Clr Michael Jones, told the Knutsford Guardian: “This event provided the opportunity to thank our ‘Digital Champions’ for their hard work in helping to raise awareness of the poor speeds currently available in our rural areas and encouraging residents and businesses to register their demand with us.
“They have helped secure more than 8,000 registrations over the past year and without their support we would not be launching the project. Faster broadband speeds will make a huge difference to everyone,” he went on to say.
