20,000 Inverness homes to benefit from fibre optic broadband
Thousands of homes and businesses in Inverness, Scotland, are set to receive high-speed fibre broadband for the first time, according to provider BT.
The telecommunications giant confirmed that over 20,000 local firms and individual households will see the benefits of the speedy service over the coming weeks, as engineers put the finishing touches to the upgrade.
Inverness and nearby Nairn will be the first locations in the Highlands and Islands to benefit from the new broadband, and other areas that will receive it later on this year include Fort William and Oban.
In 2014, other areas including Elgin, Forres and Dunoon will receive the broadband. From next year onwards, 47,400 homes and businesses will be benefiting from it, thanks to the eight exchange areas that will be covered.
The new broadband is being installed as part of BT’s commercial fibre broadband roll-out scheme, which is costing in the region of £2.5 billion.
Director of BT Scotland, Brendan Dick, told The Scotsman: “BT’s fibre network is expanding into the heart of the Highlands, bringing a welcome boost for local economies wherever it goes. Research suggests that within 15 years fibre broadband could bolster the economy of a typical town by £143 million and create 225 new jobs, 140 new start-up businesses and 1,000 more homeworkers.
“As more than 1.5 million households and businesses have already discovered, fibre broadband opens up a whole new world to internet users. Whatever you’re doing online, you can do it better and faster with fibre,” Mr Dick went on to say.
He also spoke of the many benefits that super-fast broadband can bring the homeowner and business owner, from “education, shopping, entertainment, social networking” to “file and data transfers, conferencing and computer back-up.”
