Superfast broadband 'speeds up' Midlothian region
Homes and businesses in the Midlothian region of Scotland have now been connected to superfast broadband as part of a £410 million project carried out in partnership with BT and Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband. As a result, 35,000 properties now have access to superfast broadband.
Midlothian is a particularly tricky place to lay cable to properties due to its rural setting. However, local towns and villages such as Temple, Pathhead and Gorebridge have now been fully connected. This recent rollout of fibre broadband means that, due to the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband project, over 600,000 homes and businesses now have access to the fastest internet available in the UK.
According to the Digital Scotland project, 2,800 fibre cabinets were constructed and built, and over 7,500km of cable was laid. This ensures that Midlothian residents get access to fast and reliable broadband connections of up to 80Mbps. Digital Scotland has further ambitions, to deliver this superfast broadband to 95 per cent of the country by the end of March 2018. Combined with commercial projects, this is set to achieve its target ahead of the Scottish parliament’s goal of 2020.
Jim Bryant, Midlothian councillor said of the successful rollout of superfast broadband: “It is really positive to see that the Digital Scotland programme is now really starting to move into areas such as Bonnyrigg, Dalkeith, Mayfield, Newtongrange, Straiton, Pathhead, and Gorebridge.
“The difference that fibre broadband is making to these more remote areas is remarkable; whether you work from home, run a small business or are a busy family all wanting online at the same time.”
