Sheffield comes in bottom five cities for worst internet speeds
Sheffield has some of the worst broadband speeds according to research taken from Uswitch. It has found that Sheffield is in the bottom five cities in the country when it comes to internet connections.
The research found that the city of Sheffield was 38th out of 42 towns and cities, with its downloads speeds almost half of those offered in the best cities such as Brighton, Belfast, and Middlesbrough. The findings, taken between August 2015 and February 2016, found that Sheffield’s average speeds were 18.36 Mbps, compared to the 34.46 Mbps experienced in Middlesbrough.
The research has already been promoted by a campaign set up to ensure better internet speeds for the country. Fix Britain’s Internet, comprised of leading internet service providers, have been campaigning for more reliable internet and speeds. They pointed to their own research where it was said that approximately 56 per cent of the population were unable to perform tasks such as stream films, chat on Skype or even work from home.
A spokesperson for the campaign said: “A quarter said the frustration caused by slow internet is comparable to public transport delays, and one in seven believe it induces the same level of stress as being on a long-haul flight next to screaming children.”
Ofcom, the regulator for broadband and telecoms, is already looking into major reforms. This includes making Openreach a more distinct company and allowing consumers a better choice for broadband networks and better coverage for businesses and homes across the country. According to Sharon White, chief executive for Ofcom, they are “pressing ahead with the biggest shake-up of telecoms in a decade, to make sure the market is delivering the best possible services for people and business across the UK.”
