Nottinghamshire 'fastest broadband speeds' in UK thanks to fibre
More than 95 per cent of homes and businesses in Nottinghamshire now have access to super fast fibre optic broadband ahead of schedule, according to a project.
The Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire (BBfN) project is a joint venture between Nottinghamshire County Council and BT and is co-funded by the government's Broadband Delivery UK scheme.
The successful rollout of the project puts it well ahead of the government's target to have 95 per cent of all households and businesses accessing superfast broadband by the end of 2017. Furthermore, Nottinghamshire is now, according to latest figures released by website ThinkBroadband, the most fibre-connected county in the UK.
Diana Meale, the chair of Nottinghamshire Council's Economic Development Committee, said of the rollout: “Delivering the scheme in a diverse county like Nottinghamshire has been challenging, but I am delighted that we have been able to provide the first phase of such a massive project ahead of schedule and within budget.”
More than a quarter of homes and businesses have switched to the faster internet connection and in many parts of the county, fibre optic take-up has exceeded more than 50 per cent. With the first stage of the BBfN project done, work has now commenced on the second sprint, which aims to extend the fibre optic connection to 98 per cent of all premises by 2018.
“Phase two of BBfN is being more targeted at those districts with more rural areas where, despite making large strides in improving coverage, more investment is needed to bring them up to the level of coverage enjoyed by the rest of the county," Meale explained.
She added: "In many cases, people and businesses living in those towns and villages have been unable to access the online services, learning, communication and opportunities that many of us now take for granted — but not for much longer.”
