Newcastle to become super-connected city
The economy of Newcastle upon Tyne is forecast to grow by around £150 million as a result of it becoming one of the UK’s first super-connected cities.
A target has been set to connect 97 per cent of the city to superfast broadband by 2015 by the Go Digital Newcastle project. Business support, including vouchers worth up to £3,000 to make the most of the improved network, free wi-fi and a cloud computing innovation centre are part of the plans.
The estimated economic boost is based in figures from the UK Broadband Impact Study published, which said that the economy will benefit by £20 for every £1 the Government invests in broadband.
Newcastle City Council leader, councillor Nick Forbes, told The Journal: “The economic benefits to the city will be significant and further cement Newcastle’s reputation as an exciting place to live and work.
“Go Digital Newcastle will boost the local economy and help create and protect local jobs.”
The city council is responsible for delivering the Go Digital Newcastle scheme, which is backed by the Government.
A total of 22 super-connected cities are being created nationwide, which aim to boost business, charities and other organisations through better connectivity.
Herb Kim, who organises the Thinking Digital Conference held annually in Gateshead, said: “Faster broadband means our businesses can be more competitive, our research more intensive and our collaboration made all the easier. It is the fundamental foundation for a 21st Century economy.”
As well as business benefits, people living in Newcastle will be given the option to upgrade to fibre broadband at home. Free wi-fi will be available in the city centre and public buildings and there are plans to extend it to the Tyne and Wear Metro train service.
