EC to examine Europe's telecoms and broadband industries
The European Commission (EC) has announced two separate reviews of Europe's telecoms and broadband industries.
The EC is the executive body of the European Union responsible for proposing legislation. The organisation has said that between now and 7 December 2015 it will be holding consultations with vendors, public bodies and businesses to see how the telecoms and broadband industries will be changing over the coming years and what, if any, legislative changes the EC might need to make.
According to a statement released by the EC, the review is aimed at understanding whether the existing rules "sufficiently incentivise" businesses operating in the telecoms market to invest in the telecoms infrastructure necessary "to meet tomorrow's high-capacity demands across the whole [EU]".
Furthermore, the Commission said it will similarly be looking at what incentives need to be introduced for there to be the required "investment in high-speed broadband". Specifically the consultations will explore what internet speed and quality people are likely to expect from their fixed and mobile networks in products, apps and services beyond 2020.
The twin reviews comes after the EC already made two landmark decisions earlier this year in which is revealed that it would be supporting net neutrality and the end of mobile roaming charges.
Commissioner for the digital economy and society, Günther Oettinger, said that addressing the changes that need to be made in the telecoms and broadband industries is vital in ensuring the growth and success of the digital market.
He explained: “We therefore need rules that underpin sustainable, market-based, high-performance fixed and wireless broadband infrastructures for 2020 and beyond. And it is not just about the telecoms sector; every part of our economy and society has a vital stake in these issues. We therefore seek a broad and inclusive public debate, based on the best evidence of future needs."
