Broadband speed boost for hundreds of Bury businesses
Over 200 businesses in Bury are set to get a broadband boost thanks to a connection grant provided by Bury Council.
The £660,000 connection grant is part of an ongoing campaign by the local council to get more homes and businesses connected to superfast broadband. The connection grants come after Bury Council invested in fibre optic broadband through the Greater Manchester Get Digital Faster programme.
The programme is part of a £15 million partnership partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund, BT, Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) and councils across the region. So far it has installed over 500 fibre cabinets and connected over 41,000 businesses and households to superfast broadband.
The connection grants are specifically aimed at small businesses, charities and social enterprises in an effort to help them cover the infrastructure costs it takes to connect to faster broadband speeds.
Speaking at the recent Full Council meeting on September 14, councillor Sandra Walmsley spoke of the recent success of the Greater Manchester Get Digital Faster programme. She said: “This programme brings faster broadband speeds to those areas that fall outside of a commercial rollout programme.
“Our investment has resulted in faster broadband speeds being available to 99 per cent of premises across the borough.
“Bury’s take-up rates are one of the highest across Greater Manchester. To maximise our investment, it is crucial that we ensure as many of our businesses and residents are aware that they can ask for access to faster speeds.”
