Better upload speeds required, survey finds
More British people are calling for better upload speeds, according to a survey from ISPreview.
The study involved over 2,200 people in the United Kingdom. Of the 94 per cent of respondents that are familiar with internet upload speeds, 30 per cent stated that they needed to have an upload performance of 20Mbps or more.
Usually, the main complaints on surveys are the download speeds in the UK. While these continue to be an issue, with rural areas a particular concern, upload speeds are something that is becoming more essential. Typically, internet service providers (ISPs) provide between 12 and 19Mbps for upload speeds.
The survey suggests that this is due to people needing to share things online. Media formats such as Youtube, livestreaming apps such as Periscope and Facebook Live as well as popular video streams on Twitch have meant that upload speeds are becoming increasingly popular.
The demand for better upload speeds has increased dramatically over recent years. When the survey was conducted in 2014, just four per cent of UK respondents were aware of what their upload speeds were, and 58.5 per cent of respondents did not feel that upload speeds were a concern to them.
ISPreview.co.uk founder Mark Jackson, said of the survey results: “Over the years, upload speeds needs have begun to change, particularly with the rapid rise of social networking such as Facebook and WhatsApp.
“Suffice to say that it’s easy to see why the demand for better upload performance is growing, as anybody who has ever tried to upload a large number of high-quality pictures and videos.
“Furthermore it’s clear from this that the Government’s plan to introduce a new 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) by 2020 must pay serious heed to the need for comparable upload performance, particularly with 65% of respondents now claiming to ‘NEED’ an upload speed of 10-20Mbps+.”
