Additional 90,000 homes in Staffordshire connected to superfast broadband
Two areas of Staffordshire are celebrating getting access to superfast broadband as part of a countywide campaign to get faster internet to rural and difficult to reach areas. The areas of Knightley and Woodseaves have gone live with fibre broadband as part of the Superfast Staffordshire campaign.
The Superfast Staffordshire campaign is part of the government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme that has so far connected over 90,000 premises including houses and businesses. This has enabled these properties to gain access to superfast broadband download speeds of up to 80Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20Mbps. When combined with commercial fibre broadband rollouts, the number of properties with access to superfast broadband rises to 465,000.
One of the businesses connected to superfast broadband includes the Country, Land and Business Association (CLA). As a rural watchdog, the CLA campaigns for owners of land, property and business in rural England and Wales This includes a recent campaign for better broadband for businesses in the countryside. Now, with the recent upgrade to its Midlands headquarters in Woodseaves, the CLA is now celebrating the arrival of superfast broadband. In a statement, CLA Midlands regional director Caroline Bedell commented on how CLA are “delighted to become part of the Staffordshire Superfast network” and how the Midlands headquarters at Woodseaves “can now share data and use the same programmes via our London-based servers.”
The latest news is positive news for Superfast Staffordshire as it was initially suggested in 2016 that 20,000 homes would be connected to superfast fibre broadband. With 90,000 premises now connected, Staffordshire appears to be well ahead of its targets. Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council’s economic growth leader, said: “"People and business in rural areas should not be restricted by their location, and the Superfast Staffordshire programme is enabling thousands of properties across the county to get connected. Superfast broadband is essential to any business and is vital to ensure vibrant and thriving rural communities.”
