Welsh town benefits from Superfast Cymru scheme
More than 40,000 homes and businesses in the Welsh town of Usk, Monmouthshire have gained access to superfast broadband thanks to a new rollout.
The nearby village of Nantyderry also stands to benefit from broadband speeds in excess of 24Mbps, Cable.co.uk reported. Furthermore, ministers have said that Superfast Cymru - Wales' superfast broadband scheme - will be delivering improved broadband connections to even more of the country's residents over the coming weeks.
Julie James, the Welsh Government’s deputy minister for skills and technology, said: "Superfast broadband has the ability to change the way we live our lives, from accessing entertainment and communicating through social media to how businesses interact with customers and how we use public services.
"It’s great news that the first residents and businesses in Nantyderry and Usk are now able to receive it. The Welsh Government is committed to seeing Wales become a truly digital nation and the Superfast Cymru programme is vital in making that vision a reality."
The Superfast Cymru initiative is a partnership between the Welsh Government, BT, UK Government and the European Regional Development Fund. Delivering superfast broadband to around 480,000 premises that would not have been otherwise supplied by commercial roll outs, it is the largest project of its kind in the UK.
A further investment of £19 million has seen an extra 42,000 homes and businesses in Usk, a small town situated 10 miles northeast of Newport, now benefit from the scheme.
Wales Office minister Alun Cairns commented: “This has been a priority for the UK government and we have made significant progress.
"I am very pleased that over 40,000 more premises across Wales will now share in the benefits of superfast broadband – joining the nearly half a million homes and businesses in Wales that our project has already reached."
