uSwitch exposes difference in internet speeds
A recent report from uSwitch shows that UK internet speeds still vary enormously depending on the regions.
The very fastest internet speeds were recorded in a particular street in Telford, where residents enjoyed download speeds of 70Mbps. This is compared with the slowest, of just 0.13Mbps recorded in a street in Stamford.
The figures suggest that there is still a significant difference between the fastest and slowest speeds, which means the government is still some way away from ensuring everyone has decent download speeds.
uSwitch’s broadband expert, Julie Stent, said that the slow speeds many in rural regions are having to endure is tantamount to having no internet connection at all. She added, "It’s concerning that the main aim isn’t providing a decent broadband service to those areas still lacking basic broadband infrastructure and bringing acceptable average speeds to those in rural areas who have been forever languishing in the slow lane."
The figures were collected after some 2.3 million speed tests were carried out. A list of the fastest ten and slowest ten streets were then compiled by uSwitch to illustrate the difference between the haves and the have-nots, when it comes to internet connectivity.
uSwitch claims that the problem is being compounded by the fact that the government funding for broadband is paid to local councils, who are then left to make decisions regarding spending themselves. Ms Stent explained, “Part of the problem is that Government funding for super-fast broadband is being dished out to councils, who don't necessarily have a full view of the big picture."
