UK tech wage ‘double national average’ (but still lags behind US)
The average UK technology worker’s salary is £56,000, double that of the national average of £28,000, according to a new report.
However, the research from Hired shows that while UK tech workers are fairly well rewarded, their wages are some way below their counterparts around the world. In fact, they are among the lowest in the world.
The UK ranks third bottom on the list of highest paid workers in the technology industry, with only employees in Singapore and France earning less.
Hired’s 2017 State of Global Tech Salaries report, for example, shows tech workers in San Francisco earn a tidy $135,000.
London-based tech workers have also seen their wages fall by 1.7 per cent year-on-year since 2015. Those in Seattle, on the other hand, have earned nearly 2.2 per cent more each year.
The report states: “This year’s data reveals that higher salaries await candidates who are willing to move to a new city. In nearly every market, companies offer more money to individuals who are relocating than local candidates.
“This is particularly true of European, Canadian and Asian markets, where non-local candidates can earn up to 57 per cent more than local candidates.”
