Superfast Dorset rolls out to more homes and businesses
West Dorset towns and villages were celebrating after superfast broadband was rolled out to the region. Businesses and homes in the communities of Askerswell, Broadoak and Drimpton, will now be able to have fast internet connections thanks to the Superfast Dorset campaign.
Over 26 per cent of people in the Superfast Dorset region has already chosen to connect to superfast internet. Next year in 2017, over 4,000 premises will be connected to fibre broadband. This has triggered extra funding for the campaign which will be used to roll out to more communities and districts. The Superfast Dorset project is currently funded by the Government as well as in part by BT.
As a result of the campaign, nine out of 10 properties in Dorset can now access superfast broadband. Grant Munn, BT programme for Superfast Dorset has said that the plan is to extend and reach more communities, in particularly the difficult to reach areas. “The Superfast Dorset programme is going from strength to strength. We are seeing strong take-up of fibre broadband across the county, and this is helping us reach even more communities.
“Fibre broadband offers tremendous opportunities whether you are a local business seeking to attract new customers and work more efficiently, a student carrying out online research or a household using the technology for entertainment and social media purposes.”
Colin Jamieson, a Dorset County Council cabinet member, called the new rollouts a success. He said in a statement: “As this has been achieved, the money will be used to extend the network to areas previously outside the planned coverage area which is great news.
“Investing public money in fibre broadband helps sustain our rural communities and maintains Dorset’s competitive edge as a business destination.”
