Sky Broadband customers struggle with congestion through 34 exchanges

Connection issues are blighting Sky Broadband customers, according to recent reports from 34 areas of the country.

Those affected have been mainly connected to Sky’s unbundled exchanges and the problems have been occurring since the end of February. Despite customers already experiencing the congestion in their broadband service for a week or so, they have been told that it could be April until the problem, which is causing slower connections and latency for users, is fixed.

"We apologise for the ongoing inconvenience to affected customers,” stated Sky. “We have been working hard to resolve the intermittent service issues being experienced by customers on a small number of exchanges," it added.

It also pointed users in the direction of a list of 34 regions affected, which includes areas of central London, such Bermondsey, as well as rural locations as far away as Wales. These areas have “currently congested exchanges” according to Sky, while broadband analysts claim the problems are down to increases bandwidth demand resulting from increased video traffic.

The exchanges have been upgraded to cope with this extra demand, but the upgrades, which are required for the use of services such as Netflix, may not have come soon enough. Some 14 of the affected exchanges are looking at a resolution to the problem before 14 March, while seven of the exchanges will continue to experience congestion until late April. News of these delays to fixing the problem is unlikely to please customers.
