Manchester tech companies frustrated over broadband connections
Businesses in Manchester are frustrated at their broadband connections, according to the latest YouGov study, commissioned by WiredScore.
Manchester tech companies, the largest tech cluster outside of London, are becoming increasingly frustrated at the poor connectivity experienced in the city.
In the report, while confidence in the quality of broadband connections provided was relatively high, 40 per cent of Manchester believed that improved broadband connectivity would make the company even more attractive. Ten per cent thought that the current connectivity was damaging the reputation of the city and potential investors were put off.
The study also found that just under three-quarters of those polled felt confident in the city providing a good hub to attract enough talent, citing broadband, transport links and prices as key to attracting talent to Manchester.
Speaking about the survey, Manchester City Council chief executive Howard Bernstein said it was “essential” that the public and private sector come together and help each other to ensure opportunities and resources are used to reach their potential.
One way Mr Bernstein said the council was helping the community was by running a smart city project. CityVerve is aimed at using the internet of things (IoT) to improve a number of services. Examples include talking bus stops, sensors and beacons at buses as well as an IoT bike-sharing scheme and a smart lighting system.
In a statement, WiredScore UK director William Newton said: “Manchester has long been a hub of innovation in this country, and has gone from being the heart of industrial revolution to a centre of Britain’s digital evolution. However, and certainly post-Brexit, no British city can rest on its laurels and must continuously look to future growth.”
