Half of UK endure extra slow broadband network speeds
New research from uSwitch has found that up to 50 per cent of people in the UK have to endure super-slow broadband connection speeds.
The research found that almost half of UK postcodes receive broadband at speeds of less than 6.742 Mbp/s. This compares badly with the 20 Mbp/s that is the minimum set speed for superfast broadband.
Price comparison service, uSwitch, rightly points out that the research highlights the enormous challenge the government has in trying to bring superfast broadband to the masses.
The government hopes to deploy next generation networks across the UK by 2015, but a third of the UK still endures speeds of less than 5 Mbp/s. The research was carried out over a period of six months, when 1.68 million home and business broadband connections were measured for speed. The town of Hereford, which has a population of over 55,000 people, has the worst speeds of all, with homes and business getting by on speeds of just 3.2 mbp/s on average.
uSwitch used the results to point out that it is not just rural communities that are stuck with slow internet connection, but large towns like Carlisle and Hereford, where businesses are struggling to compete.
Julia Stent, the director of telecoms at uSwitch said, “Britain might be riding the wave of a superfast broadband revolution, but for the 49 per cent who get less than the national average broadband speed, the wave isn’t causing so much a splash as a ripple.
The government has assigned some £730 million to introducing next generation broadband networks across the UK form 2015.
