Half of all EU citizens have access to superfast internet
New EU statistics showing that half of all EU citizens have access to superfast broadband has upped the pressure on the UK government to improve access to fast connections for British users.
The figures, compiled by researchers at UK-based Point Topic, found that some 96 per cent of EU homes have connectivity speeds measuring at least 144Kbps while more than 50 per cent have access to speeds of over 30Mbps. The study was commissioned by the European Commission’s DG Connect department.
Neelie Kroes, the EC’s Vice President, responded to the figures by calling for €7 billion to be earmarked for investment in further improving internet access through its Digital Agenda strategy. The Agenda intends to drive sustainable economic growth through harnessing the power of the internet and by improving connectivity for EU citizens.
The study also showed what forms of technology were most commonly used to connect people’s homes to fast internet. It showed that fast FTTP is still only being used to connect 12 per cent of EU homes, with 37 per cent receiving superfast cable connections.
She welcomed the study’s results, stating: “This study gives us the best view so far of where action is needed on broadband coverage.”
“It will help to guide decisions on where EU and private money can be invested to provide the best long-term return for taxpayers and investors such as pension funds.”
Anyone who does not have access to FTTP or superfast cable can still have superfast internet by opting for a leased line connection.
