Faster broadband available on moon than in rural Lincolnshire
The moon has faster broadband than some parts of rural Lincolnshire, according to a new book by QI.
The book from the hit BBC show, entitled '1,234 QI Facts To Leave You Speechless', includes one revelation that may surprise some Brits - that you can travel into outer space and still access faster broadband than if you were sat in a cottage in a remote part of Lincolnshire.
According to average figures calculated by the Lincolnshire Echo, there are some places in the county that barely have speeds above 1 Mbps. For example, there are roads near Brant Broughton that get a mere 1.15 megabytes a second, while South Kyme only gets speeds of 1.21 megabytes each second.
Problems areas such as this were one of the main reasons that the Government created a Universal Service Obligation (USO), which will put broadband on a par with gas, water and electricity. The USO will give people the legal right to request a connection to broadband with speeds of 10 Mbps - anyone who cannot access broadband of at least this speed can hold the providers to account.
In an email to the Lincolnshire Echo, David Cameron stated: "Access to the internet is a necessity, like gas, electricity and water. But for too long, too many people in Lincolnshire have been denied it."
Communications regulator Ofcom has announced that it is developing a new app that will enable businesses and consumers to test their broadband speeds. This in turn will empower them to complain to their providers if the speeds they are receiving are not what they were promised or, following the creation of the USO, if the speeds do not hit the 10 Mbps mark.
