East Riding invests £5.4 million in superfast broadband
East Riding in Yorkshire has become the latest local council to invest heavily in upgrading its broadband services.
Under the Broadband East Riding project, East Riding Council will invest £5.4 million to provide local residents and businesses with superior broadband access and speeds. It is hoped that this latest investment will deliver superfast broadband, with speeds in excess of 24Mbps, to an additional 4,500 homes and businesses in the area.
East Riding Council has partnered with BT for the project, which has already delivered superfast broadband to 38,000 properties. The second phase of the initiative will be rolled out over the next two years, with most of the extra properties expected to be connected by December this year.
Of the funding, £5 million will come from the central Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK). The relatively low number of properties being targeted by the second phase of the project means that the extension work could use fibre to the premises (FTTP).
John Skidmore, director of corporate strategy and commissioning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Following discussions with the Government in late 2014, the council was given the green light to progress with a second phase of Broadband East Riding, which can now start to be rolled out following the appointment of BT.
"Broadband East Riding is an excellent example of the public and private sector working together for the benefit of residents and customers.”
BDUK has been created to give local councils access to the funds they need to help the government achieve its goal of delivering superfast broadband to 95 per cent of the UK population by 2017.
Businesses today need reliable, superfast broadband, which is not always available in their area, so getting a dedicated leased line for the premises can be the best solution. hSo provides managed networks designed for business - to get an instant cost for a leased line at your location, visit our online leased line price checker.
