Cloud computing to contribute to internet job boost
Cloud computing is one area of internet technology that looks set to deliver a substantial boost in job openings over the next five years.
In a recent interview with the Telegraph, Philipp Schindler, London-based vice-president of Google, stated that the internet is set to drive job growth in the coming years. He suggested that “hundreds of thousands” of new positions will be created thanks to the internet in the run-up to 2015.
Much of this growth will be driven by the 'mittelstand' - the midsized sector of the economy. Mr Schindler called for the UK to recognise and support this area: “[The internet] opens up fantastic opportunities exactly for the mittelstand, exactly for companies who do not have 100pc of the resources to globalise as the super-large companies have, [they have the chance] to very efficiently go after new target markets.”
However, firms themselves have an important role to play and they need to keep on top of changes in the internet and the technology sector in general. For example, the option of using cloud-based computing will make a significant positive difference to companies that are able to harness its power, but there is a “need to drive technology and innovation” before the possibilities can be fully explored.
Meanwhile, Mr Schindler called for more to be done to improve broadband connectivity in the UK as businesses could well struggle to exploit the full potential of the internet. The Google vice-president remarked: “Whatever can be done on broadband connectivity on the mobile side is a fundamental pillar of a successful digital economy. I have never seen a place where more bandwidth can hurt.
“Whatever can be done - while preserving competition and not allowing monopolistic practices - to drive broadband penetration the better.”
