BT targets Battersea for fibre-optic roll-out
Battersea residents are to receive fibre-optic broadband as part of BT’s roll-out of superfast broadband services across the UK.
The upgrade to the fibre cable will be taking place over the coming weeks, with 24,000 homes in total set to be hooked up. The properties and businesses that are lucky enough to receive the upgrade could enjoy speeds of around 80Mbps downstream and a maximum of 20Mbps upstream.
Battersea is the first region to be affected by the fibre-optic roll-out. However, once this and other London schemes are completed over the course of this year, some 2.5 million London premises will have access to fast broadband, which is great news for business struggling along with slow connections.
BT London’s regional director, Chat Patel, told cable.co.uk: "The arrival of super-fast broadband in Battersea is a huge boost for local businesses and households.
"These are economically challenging times and super-fast broadband can transform their experience of the internet."
The news that Battersea is about to received the super-fast service will be welcomed in light of the research carried out by Regeneris Consulting. A report from the company claimed that BT’s fibre broadband will create 26,000 jobs and contribute £20 million between now and 2025.
