Broadband milestone reached in Wiltshire
Wiltshire has reached a new milestone in its bid to bring high-speed internet to everyone in the county as it celebrates the news that 70,000 homes and businesses now have access to super fast broadband after 400 live fibre broadband cabinets were installed in Wiltshire.
This is thanks to the Wiltshire Online programme, a multi-million pound partnership between Wiltshire Council, BT and the government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme, the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard reported.
The project not only aims to improve connectivity throughout the county, but it also strives to ensure that everyone has opportunities to become digitally literate by providing free online resources and recycled computers to families on low income.
In early 2015, the partners announced plans to launch a second phase of the project, which will see £3.86 million brought in in additional investment.
Set to launch in early 2016, this phase of the project will see an additional 5,000 households and businesses gain access to superfast fibre broadband.
This milestone will help bring the UK closer to the government’s target of connecting 95 per cent of businesses by the end of next year – a target that has been shadowed by doubt in recent months.
John Thomson, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for broadband, said: “I am delighted with the progress of our project this year.
“I am sure people will be getting gadgets at Christmas that rely on a fast broadband connection and up and down the county we now have the infrastructure in place to support them.”
Mr Thomson added that the council endeavours to connect even more residents and businesses next year as the project enters its next phase.
