Bristol named best in UK for superfast broadband
Bristol has come out on top of the list of the best British cities when it comes to superfast broadband.
This is according to a new study by Computer Business Review, based on the latest figures from ThinkBroadband. The research provides a city-by-city breakdown of the coverage and average speeds of different places in the UK.
With 97.2 per cent of the city able to access superfast broadband (speeds of 24 Mbps or higher), and average speeds of 30.6 Mbps, Bristol was chosen as the best placed to live or work if you want a great internet connection. The study also noted that the average upload speed in Bristol is 5.4 Mbps.
The figures are based on data collected in the third quarter of 2015. And the researchers note that while these are average speeds - impressive ones at that - large areas of Bristol have access to faster connections of up to 152 Mbps, with this expected to rise to 200 Mbps in the near future.
Stephen Hilton, director of Bristol Futures, said: "Broadband is the cornerstone of modern business so it is great to see that Bristol's businesses are comparatively so well served. However, we must not be complacent. The need for better, cheaper, faster connectivity continues to grow and Bristol City Council is doing all that it can to help."
Behind Bristol in the superfast broadband league table is Birmingham, followed by Liverpool, Bradford, and Leeds to complete the top five. London, meanwhile, was ranked down in seventh, which may come as a surprise to some who would have expected the UK capital to top the list.
The unenviable title of finishing at the bottom of the league table has been awarded to Hull. Just 29 per cent of properties in Hull East have access to superfast connection, and this only rises marginally to 30.5 per cent if one hops over to Hull West.
Almost all businesses today need reliable, superfast broadband, which is not always available in their area, so getting a dedicated leased line for the premises can be the best solution. hSo provides managed networks designed for business - to get an instant cost for a leased line at your location, visit our online leased line price checker.
